The Benefit Story

benefit.jpgOnce upon a time, in a small Indiana town two baby girls were born. Identical twins as a matter of fact. As the twins grew, they developed rather interesting habits. Jean ( the older one by three minutes) used the glowing behinds of fireflies to create elaborate face paint. Jane, on the other hand, spent hours counting Raisinsettes, biting them in half and trading the smaller versions for full-size M&M’s. “Miraculous!” said the observers. “Jean’s a right brain and Jane’s  left! Together they’re a perfect fit!” Everyone who knew these imaginative little girls had no doubts that they would end up doing something fabulous with their lives. And so the “tale to two twininnies” began….

After graduating from Indiana University in 1970, the twins headed west to the hilly city of San Francisco in pursuit of a modelling and acting career. It didn’t take long before this dazzling duo got picked to star in a series of commercials for Calgon Bath products, which led them to a brilliant idea: why not open a makeup boutique of their own… one that offered a unique spin on conventional beauty.

In 1976, they opened their first store in San Francisco’s Mission district called “The Face Place”. Their passion for makeup mixed with originality and a wacky sense of humour turned The Face Place into a instant “candy store” for beauty and launched original products such as benetint, lip plump and ooh la lift. No one could resist their tempting products without giggling and gossiping for more. Soon a second boutique was added to the family and in 1990, fresh off a trip to Italy where everything was “Bene! Bene!” (Italia for “good”), The Face Place was renamed Benefit and the word continued to spread. In 1999, benefit caught the attention of Paris –based LMVH Moet Hennessey Louis Vuitton – the world’s premier purveyor of luxury goods. LMVH recognized the potential of this successfully creative brand and Benefit was soon acquired, marking a strategic partnership between two likeminded companies. With an emphasis  on excellence and innovation, LMVH and Benefit formed a natural alliance. LMVH has helped with Benefit’s global expansion to open counters and boutiques around the world.

Benefit first came to UK in 1997 with the first counter opening at Harrods in London. Selfridges and other counters soon followed. By the start of 2008 there was over 250 counters and 10 Boutiques in the UK and Ireland. Along with our own retail website, regular shows on QVC and the most amazing reviews in all the most important magazines and TV shows demonstrates that Benefit is only heading 1 way.

Within Europe we are “cooking on full gas”. Benefit is well established and growing in France and Germany and we can now be found in Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal and Italy. Poland and Russia are to follow later in 2008.
